Trainer's Tips

What to consider and ask Professional Trainers before you agree to have them train your dog.

I continue to have the opportunity to train unique and different breeds of hunting dogs and am amazed at the difference in ther drive, desire, temperment and confidence. Recently at the National Pheasant Fest I was approached by a breeder of Airedale Terriers if I train their breed of dog as they are normally timid. I have always looked at the individual dogs characteristics rather than the breed in developing a Training Program and noticed most owners do not know what to ask Professional Trainers to insure they are getting one that can get the most results.

Here is a list of questions and thoughts to have when talking to a Professional Trainer about training your hunting companion.

How many dogs do you take in for training at a time?

How much time each week would you estimate spending with my dog?

Do you handle  all the training yourself?

Have you ever had a dog get lost of injured?

Do you utilize the same training method on all dogs?

What percentage of the dogs you take in for training are sent home as un-trainable?

Will my dog be kenneled by itself?

Will my dog be trained or at least exercised every day?

How do they  train timid dogs differently than bold and hard charging dogs?

Get references of people they have trained dogs for in the last 6 months.

Make sure you take the time to see all of their facilities.
